The CITB SMSTS course explained
SMSTS — the Site Management Safety Training Scheme — is CITB’s five-day Site Safety Plus course for people who manage construction work: site managers, agents and senior supervisors. It is a course with continuous assessment and an end test, not a standalone exam you can turn up and sit.
How long it lasts, and the date that matters
The certificate is valid for five years. To keep it you take the two-day SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) before it expires — if you let it lapse you sit the full five days again, so the expiry date is the one to diarise. CITB reissued the scheme rules (Site Safety Plus Appendix G) at version 03.04 in February 2026.
SMSTS or SSSTS — which do you need?
They are the same scheme at two levels. SMSTS is for managers; the two-day SSSTS is for first-line supervisors such as gangers, foremen and chargehands. If you set the safe system of work, you want SMSTS; if you supervise people working to one, SSSTS is the fit.
What it covers
Legal responsibilities and health and safety law, CDM 2015, risk assessments and method statements, site set-up and organisation, and managing the high-risk activities — work at height, excavations, scaffolding, demolition and confined spaces — plus occupational health and environmental management.
How to revise
The assessment rewards understanding a manager’s duties rather than memorising clauses. Work each topic in study mode, then sit timed mocks. Most site roles also need a CSCS card, which means a current pass in the CITB health, safety and environment test as well. PassNova’s 215 SMSTS questions explain every answer — 100% free, no sign-up.
