The complete guide

The CITB Managers and Professionals test explained

The Managers and Professionals (MAP) test is the management-level version of the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test. CSCS requires a MAP pass for the Manager (black) card, and accepts it (or the CIC Health and Safety Test) for the Academically Qualified Person card. Supervisors sit a different test — the Specialist Supervisory version — so check the CSCS Card Finder for your occupation first.

Format

50 questions in 45 minutes, multiple choice, sat at a Pearson VUE test centre. The pass mark is 90% — at least 45 correct. CITB updated the test in June 2023 and says the content is wider than earlier versions and not role-specific, so allow time to revise topics you may not meet day to day.

The five sections

  • A — Legal and management: the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM 2015 duty holders and the construction phase plan, risk assessment, method statements, RIDDOR reporting and accident investigation.
  • B — Occupational health, wellbeing and welfare: noise and vibration action values, dust and silica, dermatitis, health surveillance, stress and mental health, welfare facilities, manual handling and PPE.
  • C — General safety: fire risk assessment and extinguishers, safety signs, electrical safety and buried services, site transport, lifting operations under LOLER, work equipment and COSHH.
  • D — High-risk activities: working at height, scaffold inspection, excavations, confined spaces, demolition and asbestos.
  • E — Environment: the waste duty of care, water pollution, noise and dust nuisance, protected species and invasive plants.

How to revise

The test rewards knowing who is responsible, what must be in place and when — inspection intervals, reporting deadlines and exposure action values — more than site basics. Work each PassNova topic in study mode until the reasoning is second nature, then sit timed 50-question mocks until you are consistently scoring 45 or more. CITB also publishes a free 13-question sample test, and its MAP revision app and book contain the full question bank the test draws from.

FAQ

CITB HS&E Test: Managers & Professionals: your questions answered

What is the pass mark for the CITB Managers and Professionals (MAP) test?

The MAP test has 50 questions and a 45-minute time limit, and the pass mark is 90% — you need at least 45 correct answers. It is booked through CITB and sat at a Pearson VUE test centre.

Which CSCS cards need the Managers and Professionals test?

CSCS requires a MAP pass for the Manager (black) card. The Academically Qualified Person card accepts either the MAP test or the CIC Health and Safety Test. The Supervisor card uses CITB's Specialist Supervisory test, not MAP, so use the CSCS Card Finder to confirm which test your occupation needs before you book.

How is the MAP test different from the operatives test?

Both are 50 questions in 45 minutes with a pass mark of 45, but the MAP test is set at management level: legal duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act and CDM 2015, RIDDOR reporting, inspection regimes, occupational health thresholds and environmental law, rather than the site basics the operatives test concentrates on. CITB updated it in June 2023 and says the content is wider than earlier versions and not role-specific.

What does the MAP test cover?

Five sections: legal and management; occupational health, wellbeing and welfare; general safety; high-risk activities; and the environment. PassNova's topics map onto those sections so you can revise them one at a time before sitting timed mocks.

How long is a MAP test pass valid for?

A CITB HS&E test pass is valid for two years for the purpose of applying for a CSCS card. If you leave it longer than that before applying, you sit the test again.

What jobs can I do with CITB HS&E Test: Managers & Professionals?

The CITB Managers and Professionals (MAP) test is the health and safety test CSCS requires for the Manager card and accepts for the Academically Qualified Person card. Site manager / construction manager: CSCS requires a MAP test pass for the Manager (black) card that site and construction managers hold to work on site. The Managers and Professionals (MAP) version of the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test is 50 questions in 45 minutes with a pass mark of 90% — at least 45 correct. CITB updated it in June 2023 and describes the content as wider than earlier versions and not role-specific, across five sections: A Legal and management, B Occupational health, wellbeing and welfare, C General safety, D High-risk activities and E Environment.
