The CITB SSSTS course explained
SSSTS — the Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme — is CITB’s two-day Site Safety Plus course for first-line supervisors on construction sites: gangers, foremen, chargehands and anyone stepping up to supervise a team.
How long it lasts
The certificate is valid for five years. Renew it with the one-day SSSTS Refresher (SSSTS-R) before it expires; once it has lapsed CITB requires the full two-day course again, so book the refresher while the certificate is still in date.
SSSTS or SMSTS?
Same scheme, two levels. SSSTS is aimed at supervising work to a safe system that someone else has set; if you are the one planning and managing it, you want the five-day SMSTS instead. Supervisors moving into management usually do SSSTS first and SMSTS later.
What it covers
Health and safety law as it applies to supervisors, risk assessments and method statements, work at height, excavation safety, manual handling and plant, fire prevention and emergency planning, demolition and confined spaces, and accident investigation and reporting.
How to revise
The test is about what a supervisor should do — stop the job, brief the team, escalate — rather than legal recall. Work each topic in study mode, then sit timed mocks.
