KS3 Maths explained

Key Stage 3 (KS3) Maths covers Years 7, 8 and 9 in England — the three years before GCSE study begins. It's set out in the DfE's statutory national curriculum and is assessed by individual schools, not by a national exam.

The six strands

  • Number: place value, negative numbers, fractions/decimals/percentages, primes and factors, standard form, rounding and estimation.
  • Algebra: notation, simplifying and rearranging expressions, solving linear equations, coordinates and straight-line/quadratic graphs, sequences.
  • Ratio, proportion and rates of change: unit conversion, scale, ratio, percentage change, direct and inverse proportion, compound units like speed and density.
  • Geometry and measures: perimeter/area/volume, angle facts and polygon angle sums, transformations, congruence and similarity, Pythagoras' theorem and basic trigonometry (right-angled triangles only).
  • Probability: the probability scale, sample spaces, Venn diagrams.
  • Statistics: averages and spread, charts and graphs, scatter graphs and correlation.

How it fits with GCSE

KS3 builds the foundations GCSE Maths depends on. It deliberately stops short of GCSE-only content — surds, the quadratic formula, the sine and cosine rules, and conditional probability all wait until Key Stage 4.

How to revise

Work through PassNova's six topics in study mode, then use timed mocks to check recall under pressure — a solid KS3 foundation makes GCSE Maths, especially Higher tier, much more manageable.

FAQ

KS3 Maths: your questions answered

What does the KS3 Maths curriculum cover?

Six strands set out in the DfE's national curriculum: number (place value, fractions, standard form), algebra (equations, graphs, sequences), ratio and proportion, geometry and measures (including Pythagoras and basic trigonometry), probability, and statistics.

Is there an exam for KS3 Maths?

No — Key Stage 3 is assessed by your own school through internal tests and teacher assessment rather than a national exam. Practising builds the foundation for GCSE Maths, which starts properly at Key Stage 4.

How is KS3 Maths different from GCSE Maths?

KS3 covers the same broad strands as GCSE but at an earlier, simpler depth — for example, KS3 trigonometry stops at right-angled triangles, while GCSE Higher tier adds the sine rule, cosine rule and 3-D trigonometry. KS3 also doesn't cover surds, the quadratic formula, or conditional probability, which are GCSE topics.

Is PassNova's KS3 Maths practice really free?

Yes — all Key Stage 3, GCSE, Functional Skills and ESOL practice on PassNova is completely free, with no sign-up needed to start. A free account is optional and just saves your progress.

Where is KS3 Maths required or accepted?

KS3 builds the foundation for GCSE maths, which is a stated requirement across a huge range of jobs and apprenticeships. Building towards GCSE grade 4+: GCSE maths grade 4 is the entry requirement for teaching, nursing, police and most apprenticeships. Nursing degree entry (future): Nursing degrees need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 including maths, English and science.

Is PassNova's KS3 Maths practice free?

Yes — KS3 Maths practice on PassNova is 100% free. There's no paywall and no sign-up needed to start. A free account is optional and only saves your progress and badges.

Do I need an account or have to pay?

No. You can start practising KS3 Maths instantly with no account, no email and no card. 104 courses are fully free; every Premium question bank has a free 15-question taster.

How many KS3 Maths practice questions does PassNova have?

PassNova has 165 exam-style KS3 Maths questions and 6 timed 25-question practice tests, each with a clear explanation, plus topic-by-topic study mode.

Is the KS3 Maths practice up to date for 2026?

Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) Maths is set by the DfE's statutory "Mathematics programmes of study: key stage 3" (National curriculum in England, September 2013, ref DFE-00179-2013) — the curriculum all local-authority-maintained schools in England must teach. There is no external KS3 exam; schools assess pupils' progress internally, usually building towards GCSE. This course covers all six curriculum strands — number, algebra, ratio/proportion/rates of change, geometry and measures, probability, and statistics — at KS3 depth, distinct from GCSE content (no surds, sine/cosine rule, quadratic formula or conditional probability, which are GCSE-level). Checked against the DfE programme of study in September 2026.
