The complete guide

Functional Skills English Level 2 explained

Functional Skills English Level 2 is a widely recognised qualification that shows you can read, write and communicate to the standard employers, colleges and apprenticeships expect. Level 2 is accepted as a GCSE-equivalent (broadly equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 / C) for most purposes.

The three parts

  • Reading — understanding and comparing texts, finding information and meaning. Assessed by exam.
  • Writing — writing clearly and accurately for a purpose, with correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. Assessed by exam.
  • Speaking, Listening & Communicating — taking part in discussions and presentations. Assessed separately by your tutor or assessor, not by a written exam.

Who it's for

It's ideal if you didn't get a GCSE grade 4/C in English, need an English qualification for an apprenticeship or college course, or want to prove your English to an employer. It's offered by awarding bodies such as City & Guilds, Pearson Edexcel and NCFE.

How to prepare

PassNova focuses on the exam-assessed Reading and Writing skills — comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar and clear writing — with a clear explanation for every answer. Practise in study mode, then sit timed mocks. Your speaking and listening is assessed by your provider. 100% free, no sign-up.
