A GCSE equivalency test is an exam you can sit at any time of year to prove you are working at the GCSE grade 4 (old grade C) standard in a subject, without retaking the GCSE itself. Adults use them most often to meet the entry requirements for primary teacher training (grade 4 in English, maths and a science) and for nursing, midwifery and other healthcare degrees (usually English and maths).
Who sets them
There is no single exam board. Private providers such as A Star Equivalency, MME and Pass Functional Skills set their own papers, which follow the GCSE syllabus and can often be taken online with an invigilator. Universities and training providers decide which providers they accept, so confirm acceptance with the course you are applying to before you book.
What the papers cover
- Maths — number and percentages, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, statistics and probability, mostly at Foundation tier.
- English — reading comprehension and inference, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and a piece of writing judged on structure, technique and accuracy.
- Science — usually combined science (biology, chemistry and physics essentials) or biology on its own.
How to revise
