What's in the Functional Skills English Level 1 exam?
Three components: Reading, Writing, and Speaking, Listening and Communicating. At Level 1 the Reading and Writing assessments are marked by the awarding body. Speaking, Listening and Communicating is assessed through more than one task, such as a discussion and a presentation, and can be marked by your centre.
Can I use a dictionary in the Level 1 writing assessment?
No. Ofqual requires awarding bodies to stop learners using dictionaries or spelling and grammar checkers in the Writing assessment. At Level 1, 40–45% of the Writing marks are for accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
What level is Functional Skills English Level 1?
It sits at Level 1 of the Regulated Qualifications Framework, the same level as GCSE grades 3, 2 and 1. The Department for Education lists a Level 1 pass as the accepted English qualification for level 2 apprenticeships; Level 3 and higher apprenticeships, and many employers, ask for Level 2.
