Essential Digital Skills beyond Level 1 practice (not a Functional Skills qualification) picks up where Level 1 digital qualifications leave off. Functional Skills ICT Level 2 was withdrawn on 1 August 2024, and Ofqual's current rules cap its replacements at Level 1 — so there's no sit-able exam at this level. This course is free practice built from the DfE's Essential Digital Skills standards, stretched to genuinely advanced content.
What it covers
- Files & data: organising, naming and backing up files, understanding file types and cloud storage.
- Documents & spreadsheets: advanced formatting, mail merge, spreadsheet formulas and functions (SUM, AVERAGE, IF), sorting and filtering data.
- Online safety & security: account security, recognising phishing and scams, privacy settings, safe use of public networks.
- Communication & collaboration: email etiquette, video calls, shared documents and cloud collaboration tools.
- Problem-solving with technology: troubleshooting common issues, evaluating digital tools, and using AI tools responsibly and critically.
Why there's no exam
Ofqual condition EDSQ4.1 caps both Digital Functional Skills Qualifications and Essential Digital Skills Qualifications at Level 1 — there is currently no accredited Level 2 digital-skills qualification anywhere in the UK system. This course fills that gap with free practice rather than pretending an exam exists.
