A-level Maths: your questions answered
All the major boards (Edexcel, AQA, OCR) use three 2-hour papers of 100 marks each, sat at the end of the two-year course. The content splits into Pure Mathematics plus applied Statistics and Mechanics, and a calculator is allowed in every paper.
Pure: proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, the binomial expansion, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods and vectors. Applied: sampling, data presentation, probability and statistical distributions with hypothesis testing, plus mechanics (kinematics and forces).
Further Maths is a separate, additional A-level taken alongside Maths. It goes deeper into pure topics such as complex numbers and matrices and adds more statistics, mechanics or decision maths. You don't need Further Maths to do well in A-level Maths.
You need a calculator that can handle statistical distributions and numerical methods; many students use an advanced scientific or a graphical model. Always check it is on your exam board's permitted list and clear its memory before each exam.
The questions cover the shared core that is common to Edexcel, AQA and OCR, so they are useful whatever your board. For final revision, always work from your own board's specification, formula booklet and past papers.
