The PCV (bus & coach) theory test explained
The PCV theory test is the DVSA knowledge test you pass on the way to a bus or coach licence (category D or D1). For new professional drivers it is taken as Driver CPC part 1. Like the car and lorry tests it has two parts — multiple choice and hazard perception — both longer and set to a higher standard.
Test format and pass marks
- Multiple choice: 100 questions in 1 hour 55 minutes — you need 85 to pass.
- Hazard perception: 19 video clips — you need 67 out of 100.
You must pass both parts within two years of each other to get your theory test certificate. PassNova covers the multiple-choice part; it does not include hazard-perception clips.
Where it fits in getting your licence
You need the correct provisional entitlement and a pass in the PCV theory test before you can book the practical driving test. Drivers who carry passengers professionally also need the Driver CPC, shown by the driver qualification card.
What it covers
Beyond the Highway Code and traffic signs, the PCV bank leans towards passenger driving: carrying passengers and accessibility, vehicle weights, dimensions and stability, drivers’ hours and the tachograph, braking systems and vehicle handling, restricted view and vulnerable road users, and fuel-efficient driving.
How to revise
Work each topic in study mode, then sit timed mocks until you are consistently above 85 out of 100, and practise the hazard clips separately with the official DVSA materials. PassNova’s PCV practice mirrors the DVSA multiple-choice format and explains every answer — 100% free, no sign-up.
