The complete guide

Driver CPC explained — the four parts

The Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is the qualification you need to drive a lorry, bus or coach professionally in the UK. To gain your initial Driver CPC you pass four parts, on top of your car licence and the relevant provisional vocational entitlement.

The four parts

  • Part 1 — Theory: multiple-choice questions plus a hazard perception test.
  • Part 2 — Case studies: real-world scenarios on a computer (often called Module 2).
  • Part 3 — Driving ability: the practical on-road driving test.
  • Part 4 — Practical demonstration: showing you can keep your vehicle safe and secure (Module 4).

PassNova covers the parts you revise with questions — Part 1 theory and Part 2 case studies.

Part 1: the theory test

The multiple-choice test gives you 1 hour 55 minutes to answer 100 questions, and you need 85 to pass. You then sit a hazard perception test of 19 video clips with a pass mark of 67 out of 100. Both halves are sat together.

Part 2: case studies (Module 2)

The case studies test gives you 7 real-world scenarios with 5–10 questions each. You have 1 hour 15 minutes and the pass mark is 40 out of 50. It checks you can apply the theory to situations a professional driver actually meets.

Lorry (LGV) or bus and coach (PCV)?

The structure is the same for both. You sit the LGV version to drive lorries and the PCV version to drive buses and coaches, with the content tailored to each.

Keeping your Driver CPC

Once qualified, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your Driver Qualification Card (DQC). Driving professionally without a valid Driver CPC can mean a fine of up to £1,000.

How to revise

Work through every topic in study mode, then sit timed mock tests until you are consistently above the pass mark. PassNova's CPC practice mirrors the real multiple-choice and case-study format and explains every answer — 100% free, no sign-up.
