LGV / HGV Theory Test

The LGV theory test (still widely called the HGV theory test) is the DVSA knowledge test you pass before the practical driving test for a large goods vehicle. Like the car test it has two parts — multiple choice and hazard perception — but both are longer and set to a higher standard.

Test format and pass marks

• Multiple choice: 100 questions in 1 hour 55 minutes — you need 85 to pass.
• Hazard perception: 19 video clips — you need 67 out of 100.

You sit both parts in one appointment and must pass both. If you are working towards Driver CPC, this theory test also feeds into the Case Studies part of that qualification.

Where it fits in getting your licence

You need the relevant provisional entitlement (usually category C or C1) and a pass in the LGV theory test before you can book the practical test. Drivers who use the vehicle professionally also need the Driver CPC.

What it covers

Beyond the standard Highway Code, the LGV bank leans towards commercial driving: vehicle weights and dimensions, drivers’ hours and the tachograph, braking systems and vehicle handling, loading and securing, restricted view and vulnerable road users, and fuel-efficient driving.

How to revise
