The NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is the UK’s best-known entry-level health and safety qualification — the one most employers mean when a job advert asks for “NEBOSH General”. It suits managers, supervisors and anyone moving into a dedicated health and safety role.
The 2025 specification — GNC1 and GNC2
NEBOSH has replaced the 2018 certificate (units NG1/NG2) with the 2025 specification, whose units are GNC1 (Management of health and safety) and GNC2 (Risk assessment). Final assessments on the old specification ran on 5–6 August 2026, so anyone booking now sits the 2025 version — worth checking that any course or revision material you buy matches it.
How it is assessed
- GNC1 — a five-hour open book examination, provisional pass mark 45%. Your grade comes from this unit alone: Pass 45–64, Credit 65–74, Distinction 75 or above.
- GNC2 — a four-hour practical risk assessment of your own workplace, marked Pass or Refer. It does not affect your grade, but you need it to hold the qualification.
What it covers
Eleven syllabus elements: why we manage health and safety, management systems, managing risk through people and processes, monitoring and measuring, physical and psychological health, musculoskeletal health, chemical and biological agents, general workplace issues, work equipment, fire, and electricity.
How to revise
Open book does not mean easy — GNC1 is applied, so practise using the material against a scenario rather than looking things up under time pressure.
