IOSH Working Safely® is the entry-level safety and health course from IOSH, the Chartered body for occupational safety and health professionals. It is a one-day course for employees at any level, in any sector, delivered by IOSH-approved training providers in person, online or hybrid, and it needs no previous safety training. The sister course for managers and supervisors is IOSH Managing Safely.
The five modules
- Introducing working safely: the human cost behind accident statistics, why everyone has a responsibility, and your own legal duties as a worker.
- Defining hazards and risks: hazard versus risk in everyday language, likelihood and severity, and how risk assessment and the hierarchy of control work.
- Identifying common hazards: slips, trips and falls, work at height, manual handling and display screen equipment, fire, electricity, hazardous substances and asbestos, vehicles and machinery, noise and vibration, aggression, stress and lone working.
- Improving safety performance: safe systems of work, PPE, welfare, first aid, reporting accidents and near misses, inspections and health checks.
- Protecting the environment: waste, spills and pollution, and what each worker can do.
The assessment
Everything happens on the day: a multi-format question paper and a multi-choice hazard-spotting exercise. There is no separate exam and no pass mark published by IOSH; your provider marks the paper under IOSH guidance and successful delegates receive a certificate that can be verified online.
How to prepare
The course is deliberately jargon-free, so revise the practical facts: what to do when you spot a hazard, the safe way to lift, the ladder rules, the noise and vibration figures, the routes by which substances enter the body, and who reports what.
