The complete guide

The ADI Part 1 test explained

The ADI Part 1 test is the theory stage of qualifying as an Approved Driving Instructor with the DVSA. It is harder than the learner theory test: the same two parts — multiple choice and hazard perception — but with more questions and higher pass marks, to reflect the standard expected of someone teaching learners.

Test format and pass marks

  • Multiple choice: 100 questions across four bands of 25 (road procedure; traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge; the driving test, disabilities and the law; publications and instructional technique). You need 85 out of 100 overall and at least 20 in every band.
  • Hazard perception: 14 clips with 15 scoreable hazards — you need 57 out of 75 (higher than the 44/75 a learner needs).

Where it fits in qualifying

Becoming an ADI has three stages: Part 1 (this theory test), Part 2 (an advanced driving-ability test) and Part 3 (a test of your ability to instruct). You must pass Part 1 before taking Part 2, and attempts are limited, so a solid theory foundation matters.

What it covers

The banded structure forces real breadth: road procedure and traffic signs, car control and dealing with pedestrians, the mechanics of the driving test and the law, disabilities, and — unique to instructors — the official publications and the principles of instructional technique.

How to revise

Because every band must clear 20/25, revise across all four rather than to a single total. Work each topic in study mode, then sit timed mocks until you are consistently above 85 with no weak band. PassNova’s ADI Part 1 practice explains every answer — 100% free, no sign-up.
