Functional Skills Maths Entry Level explained
Functional Skills Maths Entry Level is the foundation tier of Functional Skills Maths, sitting below Level 1 and Level 2. It's built for adults who want to build confidence with everyday numeracy — numbers, money, time, measures and shapes — often as a stepping stone towards Level 1.
Entry 1, 2 and 3
- Entry Level 1: numbers up to 20, simple addition and subtraction, recognising coins and notes, telling the time in hours, basic 2-D and 3-D shapes, and reading simple lists and charts.
- Entry Level 2: numbers up to 200, times tables, division with remainders, rounding to the nearest 10, simple fractions (halves, quarters, tenths), decimals to one place, and reading bar charts.
- Entry Level 3: numbers up to 1,000, multiplication and division with two-digit numbers, decimals to two places, more shape properties including symmetry and angles, and reading simple line graphs.
How it's assessed
A non-calculator element and a calculator element (one test or two, depending on the awarding body), graded pass or fail. The Department for Education sets the subject content that every awarding body — City & Guilds, Pearson Edexcel, NCFE and others — must build their qualification against, so the skills tested are consistent wherever you sit.
How to revise
Work through PassNova's topics in order of your Entry Level, starting with the number skills before moving to measures, shape and data — the numeracy in later levels builds directly on the level before it.

Functional Skills Maths Entry Level: your questions answered
What is Functional Skills Maths Entry Level?
It's the foundation tier of Functional Skills Maths, below Level 1 and Level 2, covering basic numeracy in three steps — Entry Level 1, 2 and 3. It's aimed at adults building confidence with numbers, money, time, measures and shapes, often as a stepping stone towards Level 1.
What's the difference between Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3?
Each step widens the number range and skills covered: Entry 1 works with numbers up to 20 and simple addition/subtraction; Entry 2 goes up to 200, adds times tables, rounding and simple fractions; Entry 3 goes up to 1,000, adding two decimal places, more shape properties and reading line graphs. All three stay well below Level 1 difficulty.
How is Functional Skills Maths assessed?
Through a non-calculator element and a calculator element (one test or two, depending on the awarding body), marked Pass or Fail. The awarding body — for example City & Guilds or Pearson Edexcel — sets the timings, and your approved centre arranges the booking.
Do I need Entry Level before Level 1?
Not always — many adults start straight at Level 1 or Level 2 if their existing maths is strong enough. Entry Level exists for learners who need to build basic numeracy first, and it's commonly used as a stepping stone towards the Level 1 qualification that many Level 2 apprenticeships require.
Where is Functional Skills Maths Entry Level required or accepted?
Entry Level is the first step on the Functional Skills ladder towards Level 1 and Level 2. Step towards Level 1: Level 1 is the maths qualification the government lists for level 2 apprenticeships. Level 2 apprenticeships (via Level 1): Reaching Level 1 opens the apprenticeship route; Level 2 is the GCSE-4 equivalent.

Yes — Functional Skills Maths Entry Level practice on PassNova is 100% free. There's no paywall and no sign-up needed to start (Premium adds timed exam papers of 25 questions in 60 minutes). A free account is optional and only saves your progress and badges.

How many Functional Skills Maths Entry Level practice questions does PassNova have?
PassNova has 113 exam-style Functional Skills Maths Entry Level questions and 4 timed 25-question practice tests, each with a clear explanation, plus topic-by-topic study mode.
Is the Functional Skills Maths Entry Level practice up to date for 2026?
Functional Skills Maths Entry Level 1–3 is governed by the Department for Education's "Functional Skills subject content: Mathematics" (updated 8 November 2024) — every Ofqual-recognised awarding body (including City & Guilds, Pearson Edexcel, NCFE and Open Awards) must build its qualification against this same content, so the numbers, money, time, measures and shape skills tested are consistent wherever you sit. Entry Level sits below Functional Skills Level 1: Entry 1 covers numbers up to 20, Entry 2 up to 200 (with times tables and simple fractions), and Entry 3 up to 1,000 (with decimals to two places). The maths assessment has a non-calculator element and a calculator element (one test or two, depending on the awarding body), graded Pass/Fail; the exact booking, timing and location depend on the awarding body and training provider you register with. A Level 1 pass is the maths level listed for Level 2 apprenticeships, and Level 1 and Level 2 open the way to many further courses. Checked against the DfE subject content in September 2026.
