Do all construction workers need a CSCS card?

Most UK construction sites require workers to hold a valid CSCS card before being allowed on site. While not legally mandatory, the vast majority of main contractors and developers require it as standard.

Do I need to pass a test to get a CSCS card?

Yes. All CSCS card applicants must pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test before applying. The test costs £21 and consists of 50 questions in 45 minutes.

How long is a CSCS card valid for?

Most CSCS cards are valid for 5 years. You will need to renew your card before it expires, which usually requires retaking the HS&E test.

What is the Experienced Worker route?

If you have significant on-site experience but no formal NVQ qualification, CSCS offers a route based on employer endorsement and an assessment of prior learning. Check the CSCS website for current eligibility criteria.
