QTS skills: what's assessed now

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is what you need to teach in most state schools in England. For years, trainees had to pass separate professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy before starting — but those standalone tests were withdrawn in June 2020.

How numeracy and literacy are assessed now

Instead of a booked skills test, your initial teacher training (ITT) provider is now responsible for making sure you have the numeracy and literacy you need. The skills are assessed and developed during your training, against the Teachers' Standards, rather than in a one-off exam beforehand.

Why practise these skills?

The maths and English haven't gone away — you need to be confident with them to train and to teach. Strong numeracy (percentages, fractions, ratio, averages and interpreting data) and solid literacy (spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension) make your training easier and help you model good standards to pupils.

What to practise

  • Numeracy: mental arithmetic, percentages and fractions, ratio and proportion, averages, and interpreting tables, charts and graphs.
  • Literacy: spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension.

Using PassNova

PassNova's QTS practice rebuilds exactly these numeracy and literacy skills, with a clear explanation for every answer. It mirrors the style of the old skills tests, which makes it ideal preparation for the assessments your training provider sets — 100% free, no sign-up. Always check your own provider's requirements, as approaches vary.

FAQ

QTS Professional Skills: your questions answered

No — the standalone QTS professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy were withdrawn in June 2020. You no longer book or sit them. Instead, your teacher-training provider makes sure you have the numeracy and literacy you need during your training.
