QTS skills: what's assessed now
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is what you need to teach in most state schools in England. For years, trainees had to pass separate professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy before starting — but those standalone tests were withdrawn in June 2020.
How numeracy and literacy are assessed now
Instead of a booked skills test, your initial teacher training (ITT) provider is now responsible for making sure you have the numeracy and literacy you need. The skills are assessed and developed during your training, against the Teachers' Standards, rather than in a one-off exam beforehand.
Why practise these skills?
The maths and English haven't gone away — you need to be confident with them to train and to teach. Strong numeracy (percentages, fractions, ratio, averages and interpreting data) and solid literacy (spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension) make your training easier and help you model good standards to pupils.
What to practise
- Numeracy: mental arithmetic, percentages and fractions, ratio and proportion, averages, and interpreting tables, charts and graphs.
- Literacy: spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension.

Mental arithmetic, percentages and fractions, ratio and proportion, averages, and interpreting tables, charts and graphs — the everyday maths a teacher uses. PassNova's practice covers all of these with a clear explanation for every answer.
You still need confident maths and English to train and to teach well — and to model good standards to pupils. Practising now makes your training far easier and prepares you for any assessments your provider sets.
