ECS Health & Safety

The ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment is the test you pass to get an ECS card — the competence card for the electrotechnical industry, run under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme. It is the electrical industry’s own health and safety assessment, and it is required for every ECS card, from Trainee through to the Gold electrician card.

Format and pass mark

• 50 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes.
• You need 43 correct to pass — 86%, a notably high bar, so there is little room for guessing.

Questions are drawn at random from a large published bank, so broad coverage beats spotting favourites.

How long it lasts

The assessment certificate is valid for three years, and it must have at least six months left to run when you apply for a card — so if yours is close to expiry, re-sit before applying rather than after.

What it covers

Electrical safety and specialist electrical activities sit alongside the general site topics: health and safety law, risk assessments, working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances, fire safety, first aid, PPE and environmental awareness. The electrical content is what distinguishes it from the general construction test.

How to revise
