A-level Chemistry has a reputation for being one of the harder A-levels, and there is some truth to it — the content is dense, the maths is unavoidable, and the exams reward genuine understanding rather than memorised facts. How A-level Chemistry is assessed

A-level Chemistry is a two-year linear course, which means the assessment all happens at the end rather than being spread across modules you bank as you go. There are two parts to it: the written exams and a separate practical endorsement.

The written side is three exam papers sat at the end of the second year. Between them they cover the whole specification, and they mix multiple-choice, short-answer and extended-response questions. Crucially, at least 20% of the marks across the papers are mathematical — moles calculations, rearranging equations, working with logs for pH, interpreting graphs and so on — so being comfortable with the numbers is not optional.

Alongside the exams sits the practical endorsement. This is reported separately on your certificate as either pass or not classified, and it does not contribute to your A*–E grade. It is assessed by your teachers across a set of required practicals during the course. It is worth knowing that practical skills are also tested in the written papers, so the lab work and the exams are not as separate as they first appear.

What the course covers

Whichever board you sit, the content falls into three broad strands that run through the whole qualification:

  • Physical chemistry — the quantitative, theory-heavy core: atomic structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibria, acids and bases, and thermodynamics.
  • Inorganic chemistry — periodicity and the behaviour of the elements, including Group 2, the halogens, period 3 and the transition metals.
  • Organic chemistry — carbon compounds and their reactions, mechanisms, analysis and spectroscopy, building from simple alkanes up to aromatic compounds and polymers.

Common pitfalls to avoid

A few mistakes come up again and again in A-level Chemistry:

  • Avoiding the maths. Skipping calculation practice because it feels uncomfortable is the single most common way to leave marks on the table. With at least a fifth of the marks mathematical, the numbers have to be a strength.
  • Memorising mechanisms instead of understanding them. Organic mechanisms reward understanding the why — where the curly arrows start and finish — rather than copying a diagram from memory. Examiners change the molecule, not the logic.
  • Neglecting the practical skills. Practical knowledge is tested in the written papers too, so do not treat the required practicals as separate from your revision.
  • Never practising under time pressure. If you only ever work untimed, the real clock can throw you. Sit a few mocks under proper timed conditions before the day.
