Before You Start — The 10 Most Commonly Failed Topics

  1. Algebra — expanding brackets, solving equations, rearranging formulae
  2. Ratio and proportion — sharing in a ratio, best-value problems
  3. Fractions, decimals and percentages — reverse percentage, percentage change
  4. Probability — tree diagrams, combined events, relative frequency
  5. Circle theorems — angle at centre, tangent rules, cyclic quadrilaterals
  6. Pythagoras and trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA)
  7. Vectors
  8. Simultaneous equations (substitution and elimination)
  9. Cumulative frequency and box plots
  10. Standard form and surds

Week 1 — Diagnostic: Know Where You Stand

45 min/day Goal: Find your 3–5 weakest topics

Do a full past paper under timed conditions. Mark it honestly. Write down every topic where you dropped more than half the marks — these become your Week 5 & 6 priority list.

DayTaskTime
MondayFull past paper (Foundation or Higher) under timed conditions45–90 min
TuesdayMark it using the official mark scheme. Be honest.45 min
WednesdayWrite down every topic where you lost more than half the marks30 min
Thursday–Friday— (free / light revision)

Week 2 — Non-Calculator Topics

45 min/day Focus: Number, fractions, percentages, algebra

These topics appear on Paper 1 (non-calculator). Practise without a calculator all week.

DayTopicTime
MondayFractions — adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing. Mixed numbers.45 min
TuesdayPercentages — percentage of amount, percentage change, reverse percentage45 min
WednesdayAlgebra — expanding single and double brackets, simplifying expressions45 min
ThursdaySolving equations and inequalities. Simple rearranging.45 min

MondayRatio and proportion — sharing in a ratio, direct/inverse proportion45 min
TuesdayStandard form, surds, indices45 min
WednesdayStatistics — mean from grouped data, frequency tables, histograms45 min

Week 4 — Geometry

45 min/day Focus: Angles, area, Pythagoras, trigonometry, circle theorems

Geometry is consistently where students lose the most marks on 3- and 4-mark questions. Work through each area methodically.

DayTopicTime
MondayAngles — parallel lines, polygons, bearings45 min
TuesdayArea and perimeter — triangles, trapeziums, compound shapes45 min
WednesdayPythagoras' theorem — including 3D problems45 min
ThursdayTrigonometry — SOHCAHTOA, sine rule, cosine rule (Higher)45 min
FridayCircle theorems (Higher) or arc length / sector area (Foundation & Higher)45 min
WeekendOptional: mixed geometry questions from Maths Genie
Key things to memorise before Week 5: Area formulae: circle (πr²), trapezium (½(a+b)h), triangle (½bh) • SOHCAHTOA: Sin = Opposite/Hyp, Cos = Adjacent/Hyp, Tan = Opposite/Adjacent • Circle theorems: angle at centre = twice angle at circumference; angles in same segment are equal; opposite angles in cyclic quadrilateral add to 180°

Week 5 — Full Mock Papers

45–90 min/day Goal: Find remaining gaps before the real thing

This week is about doing, not learning. Sit the papers properly — no notes, no phone, timed.

TuesdayMark AQA Paper 1. List every question you got wrong and why.45 min
WednesdayEdexcel Paper 2 (calculator) under timed conditions1 hr 30 min
ThursdayMark Edexcel Paper 2. Add to your gap list.45 min
FridayEdexcel Paper 3 or AQA Paper 2 under timed conditions1 hr 30 min

Week 6 — Targeted Revision on Weak Areas

45 min/day Goal: Close the gaps. Focus on 3- and 4-mark questions.

Do not revise topics you already know well. Go back to your gap list from Week 1 and your mock marking from Week 5. For each weak topic, do 10 targeted questions, then understand the method — not just the answer.

DayTaskTime
MondayWeak topic 1: targeted question practice45 min
TuesdayWeak topic 2: targeted question practice45 min
WednesdayWeak topic 3: targeted question practice45 min
ThursdayMixed 4-mark questions — pick 10 from past papers across all topics45 min
Friday (exam eve)Read your formula list. Do 10 easy questions to build confidence. Sleep early.30 min
4-mark questions: In GCSE Maths, 4-mark questions are where students drop the most marks. They usually require two or three steps, and you get method marks even if your final answer is wrong. Always show your working.
