The complete guide

Verbal reasoning tests explained

A verbal reasoning test measures how well you understand and evaluate written information under time pressure. It is one of the most common aptitude tests in graduate and professional recruitment — you are not tested on general knowledge, only on what a passage actually says.

What the questions look like

The most common format, used by SHL and similar publishers, gives you a short passage and a statement to judge as True, False or Cannot Say — based only on the passage, not on outside knowledge. “Cannot Say” is the one that catches people out: if the passage does not give you enough to decide, that is the correct answer, even if the statement is true in real life. Critical-reasoning tests such as Watson-Glaser go further, testing inference, assumptions, deduction, interpretation and the evaluation of arguments.

How they are scored

There is usually no fixed pass mark. Scores are norm-referenced — your raw score becomes a percentile against a comparison group, and the employer sets the cut-off. Competitive graduate schemes often sift at around the 70th–80th percentile, so speed and accuracy both matter.

Where they are used

Graduate schemes, professional-services firms, the Civil Service, banking and many management roles use verbal reasoning as an early sift. It is usually paired with numerical and logical reasoning in the same assessment.

How to prepare

The skill is reading precisely and not importing assumptions. Practise separating what the passage states from what merely sounds plausible, and work against the clock — roughly 30–60 seconds per statement. PassNova’s verbal reasoning practice explains the reasoning behind every answer — 100% free, no sign-up.
