The SIA security officer qualification explained
To work as a security guard or security officer in the UK you need a front-line SIA (Security Industry Authority) security guard licence, and to get one you must first pass a licence-linked training course. That course is the Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Industry.
What you need before you start
The SIA requires you to hold a first aid qualification, valid for at least another 12 months, before you can take the security officer training. Unlike the door supervisor qualification, the security officer award does not include physical intervention — it is built on three units covering the industry and the law, working as a security officer, and conflict management.
How the qualification is assessed
The Level 2 Award is delivered and assessed by an SIA-approved awarding organisation, so the exact number of questions and the pass mark are set by that body rather than nationally. The knowledge units are assessed by multiple-choice examination, with a separate practical assessment for conflict management. For a first licence you must have gained the qualification within the last three years when you apply, and the licence itself lasts three years.
How to revise
The assessment rewards understanding the law, your powers and their limits as a member of the public, patrolling and reporting, and how to de-escalate conflict — not memorising definitions. Work each topic in study mode, then sit timed mocks. PassNova's SIA Security Officer practice explains every answer — 100% free, no sign-up.
