CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) explained
CompTIA Security+ is a globally recognised, vendor-neutral entry point into cybersecurity. The current exam is SY0-701, and passing it proves the baseline skills employers expect for security-focused IT roles.
Exam format and pass mark
- Up to 90 questions — a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based (hands-on) questions.
- 90 minutes.
- Pass mark 750 on a scale of 100–900 — a scaled score, so it is roughly, but not exactly, 83%.
The certification is valid for three years and can be renewed with 50 continuing-education credits (CEUs) or by earning a higher CompTIA certification.
What it covers
SY0-701 spans five domains: General Security Concepts; Threats, Vulnerabilities and Mitigations; Security Architecture; Security Operations; and Security Program Management and Oversight. The 2023 refresh added more on zero trust, cloud and operational security.
Who it is for
It suits people moving into a first dedicated security role — security or SOC analyst, systems administrator — often after CompTIA Network+. Many UK and US government and defence roles list it as a baseline requirement.

Security+ is on SY0-701 (V7), live since 7 November 2023, and PassNova's 467 questions are weighted to match its five domains — General Security Concepts, Threats/Vulnerabilities & Mitigations, Security Architecture, Security Operations, and Security Program Management. On timing: CompTIA's own exam page still lists retirement only as ‘usually three years after launch (estimated 2026)’ and has published no date. A successor, SY0-801, is widely reported by training providers for 17 November 2026 and its objectives are circulating in draft — but that is not a CompTIA announcement, so treat it as likely rather than fixed. Check the exam code on CompTIA's site before you book, and note a certification earned under the current code stays valid when the next one lands.
